Refilling the joints can cost you all the money you “saved”...and then some.

That's why simply pointing a pressure washer at a dirty paver patio and turning it loose isn't necessarily a good cleaning plan.

Vinyl Is Tough, But It Still Has Rules.

Vinyl siding is everywhere for a reason.

And it's why pressure isn't our starting point.

Aluminum Isn't Vinyl With A Different Name

Older homes throughout Delaware can still have aluminum siding, and painted aluminum brings its own considerations.

-Age matters.

-Condition matters.

-The finish matters.

-Older painted siding may already show oxidation, fading or chalking before anybody starts cleaning it.

That means a dirty-looking surface isn't necessarily just dirt.

If a finish has weathered over many years, cleaning can't turn old paint into new paint.

James Hardie specifically advises against using a pressure washer on its siding because it can damage the surface. Its guidance calls for low-pressure water and non-abrasive cleaning appropriate to the contaminant being removed.

And there's another useful lesson in Hardie's recommendations.

Dirt is one cleaning problem.

Oil and grease are another.

Mold and mildew are another.

The manufacturer recommends different approaches depending on what's actually on the siding.

There it is again: What is the siding made of? And...What's making it dirty?

Answer those two questions and we're a lot closer to knowing how it should be cleaned.

Cedar And Wood Deserve Some Respect

Wood siding changes the conversation again.

Cedar shakes and clapboards can be beautiful precisely because they're natural materials.

They can also be painted, stained, sealed, weathered or left to age naturally.

That means we're not simply cleaning “wood.”

Too much pressure can damage wood fibers and finishes.

The wrong cleaning approach can affect paint or stain.

Older or weathered wood may require considerably more restraint than a tougher synthetic exterior surface.

Wood decks can take a beating.

That's one reason we build decks from wood in the first place.

But wood isn't concrete.

Excessive pressure, getting too close with a nozzle or repeatedly concentrating water in one place can damage the wood surface, raise fibers and leave visible marks.

And not every wood deck starts in the same condition: A newer pressure-treated deck isn't the same as an older deck that's been through fifteen Delaware summers. Cedar isn't pressure-treated pine. Painted wood isn't bare wood. Stained wood introduces another finish that needs consideration. Weathered boards may already have areas that deserve extra care.

So before deciding how aggressively a wood deck should be cleaned, we need to know what we're cleaning and what condition it's already in.

That's a recurring theme around here for a reason.

Composite Doesn't Mean Indestructible

Composite decking has changed tremendously over the years.

And that's precisely why saying “It's composite, so clean it this way” can be bad advice.

Different products have different surfaces, formulations and manufacturer instructions.

Trex, for example, allows pressure washing on several of its current high-performance product lines under specific conditions, while warning against pressure washing some earlier-generation products because it can damage the decking surface.

TimberTech has different instructions for its products, recommending a particular cleaner and brush and limiting power washing to rinsing at no more than 1,500 PSI.

That's a pretty useful lesson.

The name on the board can matter.

If we know the manufacturer and product, we can take its care instructions into account instead of assuming every synthetic deck gets treated identically.

That's not being overly cautious.

That's cleaning the deck you actually own.

And Then There's PVC

PVC and composite often get lumped together because neither is a traditional wood deck.

They're still not necessarily the same thing.

Even within a single manufacturer's product range, recommended brushes and cleaning methods can differ between composite and advanced PVC decking. TimberTech, for example, specifies different brush types for its PVC and composite products.

Which brings us right back to our basic rule:

Identify first. Clean second.

If the manufacturer has specific care instructions, those instructions belong in the conversation.

Because getting something clean today isn't much of a victory if the process damages the surface you're trying to maintain.

Salt Doesn't Stop At The Railing

Your deck is sitting in the same environment.

That doesn't mean they should all be cleaned the same way.

And even two concrete driveways can have different ages, finishes, stains and conditions.

Your Driveway Has A Tough Job

Your driveway deals with this stuff everyday!.

Asphalt Changes The Rules

An asphalt driveway may look every bit as substantial as concrete.

But it's a different material.

That means we don't automatically approach it with the same pressure, temperature or cleaning process we'd use on concrete.

-Age matters.

-Previous repairs matter.

-Sealer matters.

-And the stain matters.

An oil spot, algae growth and ordinary surface dirt are three different cleaning problems.

The objective isn't to prove the equipment can remove something.

It's to clean the driveway without unnecessarily damaging the surface underneath it.

That's the same principle we've been applying everywhere else around the house.

Pavers Have Something Concrete Doesn't

Joints.

And those joints matter.

A paver driveway isn't one continuous slab. Individual pavers are separated by joints that may contain ordinary jointing sand or polymeric sand.

That creates another way improper pressure washing can cause trouble.

Hit the surface too aggressively and you aren't necessarily just cleaning the face of the pavers.

You can start blowing the joint material out from between them.

Paver manufacturer Unilock specifically warns against using high power when pressure washing pavers because it can damage the surface, and notes that displaced joint sand may need to be replaced afterward.

So again:

More pressure isn't automatically more cleaning.

Sometimes it's just more pressure.

What Are Those Black And Green Areas?

If part of your driveway stays damp and shaded, don't be surprised if it starts changing color.

Algae and similar organic growth appreciate many of the same conditions we've already discussed around siding and roofs:

Shade.
Organic material.

A driveway beneath trees may behave very differently from one sitting in full sun all day.

Even the same driveway can develop buildup faster along one edge because landscaping, irrigation or shade keeps that section wetter.
